Marco CASTELLANI
ITALY 🇮🇹
I am a vfx artist, a kind of pixel sorcerer, I deal with everything that is not real in movies, and TV series, this leads me to sit a long time in front of the pc, and as beautiful as it is, I always try not to losing the connection with the real world, this desire combined with the passion to tell stories led me to cofound upix, an underground photography group that aims to bring to light what is in the depths of the earth through photography.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photo was taken during the exploration of the aerial branch of the Grotta del Presepe, a cave already known but purely underwater. Our friend Francesco Papetti managed to reconnect it by air with the nearby Grotta dei Terni and we took the opportunity to take some shots. The main difficulty was the transport of the materials along the demanding and sharp bottlenecks that you have to do to get there, they barely managed to pass the speleo bags. The technical difficulty, on the other hand, was being able to illuminate the cave and the lake without causing the sediment to rise in the water. The photos were taken with our Sony α7RII and Zeiss lenses.
NOTE: Dane Mullinax nominated on 19 May 2021 WINNER #1BEST PHOTO CAVING. Previous winner announced on 15 May was found during audit not eligible for monetary prize and he renounced.
WINNER #1 AMATEUR

JAPAN 🇯🇵
I live in Okinoerabujima, Japan. I am 40 years old.
I am now working as a caving guide. While taking pictures of customers during the tour, I was fascinated by the charm of cave photography.
Participated in a photo meeting in Spain in 2016 as an assistant to cave explorer Katsutsugu Yoshida.
Participated in an unexplored cave exploration in Laos in 2020.
When I don't have a tour, I enjoy looking for the cave by bicycle and taking pictures of the cave with the guide members.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
Okinoerabujima is famous as a sacred place for caves in Japan. There are about 200 entrances within a 60km circumference.
Among them, the cave in this photo has a total length of 11 km and is the second longest cave in Japan, which is the Oyama water mirror cave.
I took this picture as part of it.
The camera is OLYMPUS omd5 markⅡ
The lens is LUMIX G VARIO 1: 4 / 7-14
The surface of the water becomes a mirror and reflects, and we are particular about the place where the model stands and the place where the light is put in the water.

ITALY 🇮🇹
I am an italian living in Northern Italy. I've always loved the outdoors and I started rock climbing when I was 17, thanks to a friend of mine. I carried on doing it till I discovered caving many years later. From that moment on I kinda went through every mountain activity and in 2018 I finally had the chance to try some canyoneering. I felt in love with it right away. In the last ten years I've also started to take photography to those places I was so attracted to. I really wanted to portraied nature's beauty and our passion, commitment and awe while adventuring into the wild. Throughout all these years I got a lot of inspiration from some National Geographic photographers and lately I managed to publish on some magazines and books and to participate to some international exhibitions.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
I always take my Nikon D850 with me, storing it in a sturdy waterproof box. In particular I took this photo in a very narrow section of that canyon. I rappeled down the waterfall before my friend. I decided the spot to shoot in order to frame the pic with the dark walls and that narrow overhead rock bridge. The roaring waterfall was plunging into the dark around me. I had to cover the camera with my body and turn my back to the scene due to the pouring rain. I knew I had only a few istants to take that picture before the lense would be soaking wet. So I waited till the very best moment, turned to waterfall and shot a couple of pics in a row. I didn't manage to portrait the strong wind and rain but I got a nice pic of my friend enjoing the scenery
WINNER #1 AMATEUR
Pablo RAMÍREZ
COSTA RICA 🇨🇷
I am from Costa Rica, a country with exuberant natural beauties & spectacular places to practice canyoning & other adventure sports. Political scientist by profession, lover of nature, for many years I have been involved in activities such as mountaineering, mountain biking, hiking, packrafting, among others. Together with my childhood friend Norbo García we founded the group "La Garrapata", since 2020 we have been actively practicing canyoning, exploring & opening new routes in various locations around the country. Canyoning has allowed us to visit places of great scenic beauty that can only be accessed with canyoning techniques.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photograph was taken with a mobile phone camera, it is very significant since this was the first route that as a group we explored & equipped. The ravine is located to the west of the canton of San Ramón, a site with beautiful turquoise rivers, great biodiversity, dense mountains & many waterfalls, we got to know the area thanks to our good friend Miguel Ángel Herias, a Spaniard based in Costa Rica & a tireless mountaineer. We decided to visit the location in winter to appreciate the powerful flow produced by the months with the heaviest rains. Usually,I descend first & look for a place to make a photographic record of the route, in this case, already at the base of the waterfall, I climbed about 25 meters on the side because I wanted to capture its powerful beauty,I waited for my partner to descend Norbo García and we certainly loved the result.
