I have been practicing speleology for 30 years, currently president of the Supramonte Project Speleological association, I practice typically exploratory activity in the deepest caves of Sardinia and in the large karst systems of the island. I am part of the La Venta Esplorazioni Geografiche association with which I participate and organize exploratory expeditions in various parts of the world from ice to tropical forests. The great passion for photography, cinematography, caves and extreme environments, led me to be part of the "ESA CAVES" project, a training in the cave in which astronauts from all over the world participate, organized by the European space agency. I have made various photographic books and contributed to other editorial works as a photographer and author of articles. Winner of various photographic and video awards, my photos are often in scientific articles in Italy or abroad in specialized magazines of photography, caves and nature.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photo was taken with a fixed 15mm lens mounted on a Sony A7RM2, crossing the tunnels of the "Underground River" on the island of Palawan in the Philippines, one of the largest underground estuaries in the world. During the exploratory phases of the expedition organized between February and March 2020, we had to recover precious temperature sensors left in specific points from the previous expedition, important data for a focused study on the dynamics of the cave, where there is a unique ecosystem. The particularly favorable conditions of good weather and low tide have given us crystal clear waters in over four kilometers of navigation on the Bancas, typical rocker boats. In the darkness, each shot impressed surprising images, within this three-dimensional path made of reflections and colors in which we seemed to get lost.

Ada De Matteo ITALY
Ada cast 4 votes during the Jul-Sep Contest. "I decided to vote this photo because I was fascinated by the colors, the good equilibrium between light and darkness and the ability to take such sharp photo with a long exposure with the subjects of the photo stationed on aboat in a river."

I'm Alex Arnold, born in March 1987 in Switzerland and passioned canyoneer since 2011. During my canyoning activities I started photographing with small cameras until my expectations were not fulfilled and I changed for full frame system cameras. Whilst finding good solutions to protect the camera from water during our descents, including jumps until 12m, I destroyed 3 times my camera. Finally I found the Outex system which prevents damage of my Sony Alpha 7ii perfectly.
First being part of first descent teams and later leader, allows visiting places no one has ever seen before. The unknown difficulty makes this an unforgettable adventure.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The nominated photo was taken in one of those first descents. For shorter canyons (Albula has taken 4h as first descent) sometimes I take camera and drill, which is not comfortable but allows documentation. I reached this place, drilled the hole, set the anchor and rope and took then pictures of the team members going down in the aquatic, freezing cold pool. This dynamic capture was in my opinion exceptional: with the ice, narrow section and the wild ambiance.
