Jury Concept
JURY CONCEPT
QUARTERLY STANDARD ROUND
A jury of 3-6 photographers, canyoneers, cavers or nature and photo enthusiasts will evaluate the submitted photos according to a mix of their own personal criteria about beauty, technicality, creativity, impact, and innovation.
Jury member list is not disclosed till after completion of each judging round, during the winners announcement.
ANNUAL FINALE
The Jury will be composed by a maximum of 30% of past editions winning photographers not competing in the final round.
Judging process will be same as in standard rounds.
The winner photo will be nominated PHOTO OF THE YEAR.
HOW ARE PHOTOS JUDGED

A jury of photographers, canyoneers, cavers or nature and photo enthusiasts is requested to evaluate the submitted photos according to a mix of their own personal criteria about beauty, technicality, creativity, impact, and innovation.

For EACH CATEGORY (Caving / Canyoning), each Jury member picks the top 15 photos according to his/her criteria, scoring them with a 5 star rating.

A RANKING list is elaborated with all jury votes sorting the photos by:
1) First the photo that most times has been picked as top 15 (total sum of jury picks)
2) First the photo with higher total score (total sum of jury scores)
3) First the photo that joined earlier the photo contest (to resolve possible ties)

The first photo in the Ranking is declared #1 Best Photo.
The first photo in the Ranking sequence that is made by an amateur photographer is declared #1 Best Amateur Photo.

The Jury is composed by 3-8 members. The top 15 photos of the Ranking are declared ROUNDFINALISTS. They merit to be considered the best photos of the round and succeeded to pass to the annual

The 90 Finalists photos of the year are judged again by an extended Jury of 12-18 members. Being able to impress the most of such large Jury audience is really an amazing merit, that deserves the title of

WHY SUCH RATING SYSTEM?
1) When a Jury member scores all photos, the results are biased by the order of the photo: First photos are scored higher and last photos scored lower. Asked to pick Top15 makes necessary for the Jury to carefully review and fine tune their ratings after scoring all photos.
2) A very professional photo has not guaranteed to win in front of a popular amateur photo. If all judges consider a photo to be among the Top15, that photo might not be the most beautiful for some judges but is the one liked by the most and has higher chances to win.
AMATEUR CONCEPT
— AMATEURS —
‘Amateur’ wishes to refer to participants that genuinely love photography as a hobby, not having a profession in photo, film or graphic arts, and who with their own media and skills, are able to take impressive pictures.
‘Amateur photographers’ can be considered in general the authors who can tick as True all the below:
[1] Author do NOT regularly sells his photos (any kind of)
[2] Author jobs were NEVER as photographer (any kind of)
[3] Author has NEVER publicly put on sell his photos in the past (even if none was sold)
[4] Author has NEVER allowed others to use his photos in exchange for money, products or other benefits.
[5] Author has NOT won monetary awards for his photos in the last 5 years summing equal or over 5000USD
