I am a dentist from Salt Lake City, Utah. I’ve been taking photos since 2018. In March 2021 I planned a photography trip to Alaska to see the northern lights. I heard about a glacier cave a few hours from Fairbanks, AK. I have very little caving experience, but we decided to go explore it. I was absolutely blown away. It looked like there were waves in the ceiling. The texture and colors were amazing. I can’t wait to explore more caves like this one.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photo was taken in Castner Glacier in Alaska. It’s a 2.5 mile hike. We went in March and it was still very snowy. We spent over an hour exploring the cave and taking photos.
NOTE: Dane Mullinax nominated on 19 May 2021 WINNER #1BEST PHOTO CAVING. Previous winner announced on 15 May was found during audit not eligible for monetary prize and he renounced.

I did my first canyon in 1999 and started to do independent canyoning in 2006. Since then I enjoyed this sport worldwide and I was able to explore and do first descents of many top canyons.
The ambiance, the nature and the power of water amazes me every time when going through a canyon. That’s why I love this sport so much and can’t get enough of it. To share the amazing spots and situations with family and friends I started in 2008 to take a DSLR in some canyons as normal cameras were not able to do good photos in difficult light by then.
The winning photo is captured in a very special canyon, the Seerenbachfalls. The second highest waterfall in Switzerland with a height of 585m. I was able to do the first descent of this impressive waterfall together with two friends in 2012. Since then I did this canyon two times, one of it in spring 2021. At that time we were so lucky with the perfect water flow and sun, that it created this amazing atmosphere with the rainbow.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photo was taken from a drone to get the best position and the right angle. The height of this last waterfall is 190m of which 140m are free hanging. The 190m are done in one step and due to that long ropes are needed. Not only the photo is a lucky shot which kept this great moment but also the memory of this descent with my friends will remain forever.

Canyon guide and amateur photographer, based in Tuscany (Italy), I have been canyoning for 10 years exploring the canyons of Italy and beyond, to this passion I have combined the passion of photography, and in every exploration or outing, I always try to convey the wonderful part that this activity offers us.
HOW WAS THE PHOTO TAKEN?:
The photograph was taken during the descent of a canyon in Liguria, with my faithful camera.
in environments like this it is not easy to find the conditions to take home a shot, but sometimes it happens that all situations line up and that you can find the perfect moment.
